Sewing
Promoting entrepreneurship among women is the main goal of the projects of Micro-Industries. In terms of that “Sewing” is highly encouraged by AWWA among its members. Awwa has provided necessary physical and human resources in various ways to successfully undertake this program. For instance sewing machines were distributed among AWWA members and the sewing classes were also conducted in vocational training center of AWWA. And also other handcrafts related to sewing such as doll making, flower making and fabric paint designing are also encouraged.
Bee keeping
“Bee and bee honey” are important in Sri Lankan Muslim culture and all the traditional ailments and Ayurveda treatments. And of course bee honey is a medicine which is commonly used in households. So AWWA has recognized this importance and worked on facilitating AWWA members to produce their own bee honey at their home. Necessary guidance and equipment were provided for all who are interested. Now we can proudly say that AWWA members market bee honey which they produced on their own. Notably, AWWA’s sole magazine’s title is “Kurinchiththean” too reflects the unique relationship between AWWA and Bee keeping.
Grinding
Most of the AWWA members are house wives who are willing to contribute for the breadwinners of the family via entrepreneurship. Proudly AWWA has made such women’s dreams true. All the programs under Micro-Industries are good examples for them. In that way AWWA paid its attention on giving assistance to carry on “Grinding” by providing grinding machines and demonstrations on it. Clearly there are many who benefitted by this program of grinding.
Not only this but also, we are promoting our members on ‘preparing sweets’ which ultimately brings our members financial benefit. The Vocational training center of AWWA is employed as the main place where these programs are held.
Soap making
The betterment of women is the main theme of AWWA. However, all the programs under Micro-Industries are designed to contribute the breadwinners who are mostly men. Soap making is another program which AWWA has paid its attention to gain financial benefit. There are several programs to encourage soap making. Notably program of explaining soap liquid preparation done by sister Sifaya Ghaffar supported the members to do their own. Now AWWA members are able to produce soap and market them in a successful way.
