AWWA as a notable Women’s Welfare Association in the region focuses on the betterment in terms of health too. Most of the members are house wives who have the responsibility to take care of her own family. Dengue, Water hygienic issues and waste management are some of the contemporary topics which directly relate to health. So that AWWA has appointed a separate committee on ‘Health’ to encourage women to work on the betterment of the health. There are three main health programs which AWWA undertakes.

Dengue
‘Dengue’ is identified as one of the world’s fastest growing diseases. It has out broken as a threat to Sri Lanka. Akurana region is also subjected to this threat. Various social reasons have been identified as the increasing factor of Dengue. Akurana, Bulugahathenna, Dippitiya, Dunuwila, Konakalagala and Neeralla localities could be identified as areas with relatively high risk to dengue outbreaks.So, AWWA has recognized the importance of eradicating Dengue and works on it.
AWWA conducts several programs on Dengue. A discussion program on “Dengue” at the Azhar National School Auditorium was held on 04.08.2009. The program was enlightened with Dr. Lareef Zubair, Dr. Anris, Dr. Siyam Farook, Dr. Kusumawathi & Medical staff as resource persons.
Another program titled “Eradicate dengue” was held by Dr. Fazliya Thaha on 31.01.2012 at the Azhar National School, Akurana.
Ayurvedha
Ayurvedha is a traditional medical system where women can easily go with the herbs from their own home garden. AWWA’s another project called ‘Home gardening’ is also linked with the Ayurvedha. So the sub-committee on Health recognized the importance of Ayurvedha medicine and conducts Ayurvedic medical camps using well established resource persons. The campaigns are held free in charge.
Normally AWWA conducts such camps on Women’s Day. Notably 250 persons benefited from the Ayurveda Medical Camp on 17.03.2008 where 250 persons benefited. The program is held in the Royal Court hall, Akurana. There are many Ayurvedic camps were held in various places such as Mina hall, Bulugahathenna, Nirella Muslim vidyalaya and in the houses of AWWA members.
Health Camps
AWWA organizes health camps focusing on the health issues which are important to women such as awareness programs on breast cancer, general health checkups, family planning awareness programs and Tuberculosis etc. Many programs were conducted with the most eminent resource persons on Health.
Dr. Anoma Siripadha who is a well established doctor successfully conducted the awareness program on ‘Tuberculosis’ . And it was very informative and useful for the participants. Nowadays Diabetes and Cholesterol have become the common diseases where people should have more awareness. AWWA facilitated people to have a comprehensive knowledge on ‘diabetic & cholesterol’ in the seminar conducted by Dr. Fazliya Thaha.
AWWA was able to organize an awareness program on“Women’s health care” which is held by Dr. Shyam Farook in a descriptive manner. Discussion on health care and seminar on malnutrition are also successfully conducted by AWWA.
